The Porto Seguro car ferry, explained

What it crosses, and how far it takes you

The ferry links the town of Porto Seguro to Arraial d’Ajuda across the Buranhém River. It carries vehicles, which is why it forms part of a transfer route rather than a separate errand.

It does not go to Trancoso. On the far side, at Arraial d’Ajuda, there is still paved road ahead of you. That is the most common misreading of the map: the crossing is a leg, not the destination.

The line is the risk, not the timetable

The crossing itself takes about 10 minutes. What consumes time is the wait at the ramp, which on a busy day can run over an hour — and it counts in both directions, coming and going.

That is why a serious transfer does not use a fixed buffer. Departure is worked backwards from your boarding time at the airport, sized to the day of the week and the season. A flat one-hour cushion works on a Tuesday in May and fails on December 28.

A late-night flight changes the arithmetic

From 6 a.m. to midnight, boats leave every 30 minutes. From midnight to 6 a.m., Monday through Thursday, the interval stretches to an hour. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights the 30-minute rhythm holds all night to absorb the traffic.

Landing at 2 a.m. on a Tuesday can mean waiting longer for the boat than the crossing takes. That is not a reason to avoid the flight. It is a reason to settle the arrival beforehand instead of discovering it at the airport.

The foot ferry is a different boat

A second crossing runs for people only, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., every 30 minutes. It carries no cars.

It is the piece people miss when planning to arrive on their own: taxi from the airport to the ramp, cross on foot, then a bus onward to Trancoso. The arrangement works in daylight with light luggage. It does not work at 3 a.m., or with three suitcases and a small child — every transfer happens with the bags in your hands, and there are no sidewalks and no luggage carts.

What about driving around instead?

The detour exists and skips the crossing entirely: the route via the BR-367 and BA-001 runs about 75 km (47 miles), against about 47 km (29 miles) by ferry. That longer road is what travel guides clock at around 1 hr 30 min.

Neither is always better. The ferry wins outside peak hours; the detour wins on long holiday weekends, at New Year, and on any day the line is deep. The choice gets made on the day, with your flight time and the conditions in hand.

What this page deliberately leaves out

The fare. Sources disagree on it, it changes by season and vehicle type, and it is not ours to set — publishing a number here would be promising something we do not control. Hours and intervals are public and checkable; the fare, confirm at the ramp.
